For students who have grown comfortable dragging and connecting colorful blocks to create programs, the next step can feel like entering an entirely new world.

That is where Beyond Block Coding: Python and More comes in.

As part of The Science Zone’s Code @ The Zone series, the program is designed to help young learners make the transition from block-based programming into text-based coding.

 Rather than simply introducing a new language, the curriculum gives students an opportunity to begin understanding how real code is written and how those lines of code can be used to create something of their own.

The school-year program is divided into different levels so students can work at an appropriate pace. Beginners and students who are new to text-based coding can participate in Level 1, designed for ages 11–15. Students with previous coding experience or earlier coursework can move into Levels 2/3, available for ages 12–15 and intended to build on skills they have already developed.

The classes introduce students to Python programming and web design, giving them two practical areas to explore while they build confidence with text-based coding.

For young people who may have started their programming experience with block-based platforms, that transition is an important one. Instead of relying on visual pieces that snap together, students begin learning how individual commands, syntax and structure work together to create a program.

The program also reflects The Science Zone’s broader emphasis on making STEM learning accessible and engaging for young people. Coding can sometimes seem intimidating when presented only as a technical skill, but learning it through an interactive environment gives students room to experiment, make mistakes and figure out what their code can do.

The schedule is also designed with Casper families in mind. The Code @ The Zone series moved from Thursdays to Mondays, allowing students to participate without conflicting with The Science Zone’s weekly Family STEAM Nights.

Financial assistance is available as well, with needs-based program scholarships offered through the front desk through a local partnership with the Wyoming Child Support Program.

For students interested in technology, programming and the possibilities of creating with code, Beyond Block Coding offers something more than another after-school class. It provides an early opportunity to move from simply using technology to understanding how technology is built.

And for some young learners, that first step into Python could eventually become the beginning of something much bigger.
