There are weekends when you have somewhere you need to be, and then there are weekends when you can simply wander and see where the day takes you.

For Casper residents looking for the second kind, Art in the Park offers an easy place to start.

The 6th annual Art in the Park is happening Saturday, August 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Mike Sedar Park, bringing artists, music and creative activities together for a full day outdoors. The event is free to attend.

You don't have to be an artist to enjoy an art festival.

You don't even have to know exactly what you're looking for.

Maybe you'll find a painting that makes you stop for a second look. Maybe you'll discover a handmade piece you didn't expect to like. Maybe watching someone create something right in front of you will make you want to pick up a brush, pencil or camera yourself.

Or maybe you'll just enjoy walking around the park while listening to live music.

This year's entertainment includes Sparrow Bones, A Band Named Sue, Courtney Dae and The Flashback Band, giving the day a musical backdrop as visitors explore everything happening around the park.

For families, it can be a particularly simple weekend outing. There is no admission fee to worry about, and visitors can spend as much or as little time at the event as they want.

For local artists, meanwhile, an event like this creates something that can be difficult to find in everyday life: a chance to put their work directly in front of their community.

There is something different about seeing artwork outside of a screen.

You can see the details from a few feet away. You can meet the person who created it. You can ask about the idea behind a piece or simply appreciate it without having to rush through the experience.

Live demonstrations add another dimension to the day, allowing visitors to see creativity in progress rather than only experiencing the finished product.

This year's celebration also has its own artwork to represent it. Becky Elliott was selected as the winner of the 2026 Art in the Park poster contest, giving the annual event a locally created visual identity before the festivities even begin.

After six years, Art in the Park has become another opportunity for Casper to put its creative community in the spotlight.

And perhaps the best way to experience it is without overthinking it.

Come for an hour.

Stay for the music.

Bring someone who enjoys art. Bring someone who thinks they don't.

Walk around. Look closely. Find something unexpected.

A community's creativity is easiest to appreciate when you actually give yourself time to see it.

Art in the Park takes place Saturday, August 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Mike Sedar Park, 781 College Drive in Casper. Admission is free.
