The start of a new school year can bring plenty of excitement, but it can also come with a long shopping list.

Backpacks. Supplies. Clothes. Shoes. Haircuts. And, for some families, the added challenge of making everything fit into the budget.

This Friday, two local Back-to-School Bashes are giving families in the Casper area different ways to prepare for the school year while showing what can happen when local people come together to help one another.

At the North Casper Clubhouse, StillGood Natrona County and Unearthed Beauty are hosting their Back-to-School Bash, offering free resources to local Natrona County students. The event is taking place today, Friday, August 28, with a dedicated Sensory Hour from noon to 1 p.m. before opening to the general public from 1 to 7 p.m.

The Sensory Hour is designed as a quieter, low-stimulation period for children with sensory sensitivities, giving them an opportunity to choose school supplies in a more comfortable environment.

For the general public, the event opens at 1 p.m. and continues through 7 p.m. at the North Casper Clubhouse at Riverview Park, 1032 E. L. Street.

Families can receive free backpacks and school supplies, along with new and gently used clothing and shoes in multiple sizes.

Local stylists and barbers are also volunteering their time to provide free haircuts for children getting ready for the new school year.

Everything being distributed is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis, making the event an opportunity for families to pick up some of the essentials without adding another expense to the back-to-school budget.

Across town, another local effort is taking a different approach to supporting the community.

The 2nd Annual Back to School Bash charity fundraiser at Shear Designs Salon begins its Friday portion from 5 to 7 p.m. with early admission shopping and vendors.

Admission tonight is $5 per person, with organizers stating that 100% of the proceeds will go toward supporting a local family, Parker Stevens and his family.

The event continues Saturday, August 29, from noon to 4 p.m., with admission listed at $10.

Friday's activities at Shear Designs Salon include several local vendors and shopping experiences. Visitors can check out permanent jewelry, a custom hat bar and hair tinsel, while The Mooving Bookstore brings its mobile bookstore to the event. Lil' Hendrix Pinoy Food will also be serving food during the evening.

The two Back-to-School Bashes are different in their approach, but they share something important: both are creating opportunities for the community to support families as another school year begins.

One event focuses on putting essential items directly into students' hands at no cost. The other turns a night of shopping, local vendors and activities into an opportunity to raise money for a family in need.

And that is perhaps the nicest part of seeing two events like these happen on the same day.

Back-to-school season is often talked about in terms of what students need to buy. These events offer a reminder that preparing for school can also be about what a community is willing to give.
