You don't need to spend much to make the most of your Wednesday.

A Wednesday doesn't have to mean staying home simply because you're trying to save money.

In Casper, there are plenty of ways to step outside, get some fresh air, and make the most of the middle of the week without turning it into an expensive outing.

And today, there's an especially good opportunity to do just that.

On Wednesday, August 19, the Izaak Walton League's hiking group is meeting on Casper Mountain for an evening community hike. The group is scheduled to begin at 6 PM, with hikers meeting at the Sunrise parking area near the south end by the bowling alley.

The planned hike is about four miles, but participants can also take a shorter route of approximately 1.5 miles. The group welcomes hikers of different ages and experience levels, and dogs are welcome as long as they are kept on a leash.

For anyone looking for a way to spend Wednesday evening without spending money on entertainment, it's a pretty good option.

All you really need is comfortable footwear, water, a snack if you'd like one, and a jacket in case the mountain air gets cooler.

And once you're out there, the experience doesn't need much else.

That's one of the advantages of Casper.

Sometimes entertainment is already waiting outside.

A walk along the Platte River Trails can turn into an easy afternoon or evening activity. You can walk, run, ride a bike, or simply follow the river for a while and enjoy being outside.

You don't need to make it a workout, either.

Take your time.

Bring a friend.

Bring the family.

Or go by yourself and use the time to clear your head after a busy day.

Casper's outdoor spaces also give you the opportunity to create your own inexpensive outing.

Pack something from home and turn an ordinary afternoon into a picnic. Find a comfortable place to sit. Watch the river. Take pictures. Let the kids explore. Stay until the sun begins to drop.

There doesn't have to be a ticket involved for an experience to be worth remembering.

That's something worth remembering when you're trying to stick to a budget.

Being on a budget doesn't necessarily mean cutting out all the things you enjoy. Sometimes it simply means choosing experiences that don't require you to spend money in the first place.

Instead of buying an activity, find a trail.

Instead of paying for entertainment, spend an evening outside.

Instead of making a complicated plan, bring something from home and explore somewhere nearby.

And if you happen to discover a new favorite place along the way, even better.

Wednesday can be a particularly easy day to overlook.

Monday has the new-week energy.

Friday has the excitement of the weekend.

Wednesday is somewhere in between.

But maybe that's exactly why it's a good day to do something simple.

Take a break from the routine.

Get outside.

Walk somewhere you've never walked before.

Invite someone along.

Or simply give yourself an hour without worrying about how much it costs.

Tonight's community hike is one option, but it also represents something bigger about life in Casper: you don't always need a big budget to make your time here worthwhile.

Sometimes the best plans are the simplest ones.

A trail.

A conversation.

A Wyoming sunset.

A little fresh air.

And a Wednesday evening that turned out better than expected.

That's Casper on a budget.
