Fall has a way of bringing people together. It is the season of pumpkins, warm refreshments, colorful decorations, and simple traditions that become favorite memories. In Casper, one local gathering is bringing those autumn traditions into a place where creativity and community have always belonged together.

On Saturday, October 10, 2026, The Nicolaysen Art Museum, known locally as The NIC, will host its Fall Open House, welcoming the public to enjoy an afternoon of art, family activities, and seasonal festivities. Running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 400 E. Collins Drive in downtown Casper, the event is completely free.

For families looking for something enjoyable to do together, the open house offers more than a chance to spend a fall morning indoors. It creates an opportunity for children and adults to make something with their hands, explore new ideas, and experience the museum in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

One of the day's highlights is expected to be the pumpkin carving activities, where the familiar fall tradition becomes an opportunity to explore artistic expression. Guest artist Marissa Butler will demonstrate carving techniques, offering visitors a chance to see how an ordinary pumpkin can become a carefully crafted work of art.

Families attending the event will also receive one free pumpkin to carve and enter into the museum's contest. Those who would like more than one family member to participate can bring additional pumpkins. It is a thoughtful way to make room for individual creativity while giving families a shared activity to enjoy.

Pumpkin carving is often remembered for the finished design, but much of the fun happens along the way: deciding what to create, working through unexpected mistakes, laughing at the results, and seeing how differently each person approaches the same simple material. At The NIC, that familiar autumn activity becomes another way to experience the creative process together.

Beyond the pumpkin carving, the museum will have fall-themed art stations throughout the facility, inviting visitors of different ages to experiment, create, and enjoy the process of making something of their own. Seasonal food, refreshments, and drinks will also be available at no cost, adding to the welcoming atmosphere of the celebration.

The combination is part of what makes the open house appealing to families. Art does not have to feel intimidating or require years of experience. Sometimes it begins with a simple activity, a new material, or the freedom to try something without worrying about getting it perfect. Children can explore their creativity, adults can join in, and families can enjoy an experience together that goes beyond their usual weekend routine.

And while the seasonal activities provide plenty of reasons to attend, the open house also offers an opportunity to experience the museum's galleries.

Visitors will be able to explore four featured exhibitions, each offering a different way to look at art and the world around us.

On the Coast, featuring the work of Conrad Schwiering, brings coastal seascapes into the museum, offering a visual change of scenery for visitors accustomed to Wyoming's mountains, plains, and wide-open landscapes. The exhibition invites viewers to spend time with another kind of natural beauty, expressed through the artist's interpretation of the coast.

In A Home for Steamboat, visitors can discover original illustrations by local artist Zachary Pullen. The exhibition brings illustration into the museum experience and gives visitors a chance to appreciate the storytelling and imagination that can be expressed through carefully created images.

Artists Are Scientists, by Rachel Hawkinson, explores the relationship between art, experimentation, and scientific discovery. It encourages visitors to think about creativity as a process of investigation, where materials can be transformed and ordinary things can become something unexpected. The exhibition offers an especially fitting connection to the hands-on spirit of the open house, reminding visitors that curiosity and experimentation belong in both art and science.

Meanwhile, Different but Same explores culture, identity, and the experiences people share. Through artistic expression, the exhibition invites visitors to consider both the differences that shape individual lives and the common experiences that connect us. It adds a thoughtful dimension to a day built around community, bringing attention to the ways art can help people encounter new perspectives and understand one another.

Together, the exhibitions give visitors an opportunity to move beyond the seasonal festivities and spend time with a broader range of creative ideas. Someone might arrive primarily for the pumpkin carving and discover an exhibition that captures their attention. Another visitor might come to see the galleries and find themselves drawn into an art activity along the way.

That freedom to explore is part of the museum experience.

A museum can be a place to admire finished work, but it can also be a place to ask questions, try something unfamiliar, and discover a new interest. By combining gallery access with approachable, hands-on activities, The NIC's Fall Open House creates room for both experiences in one afternoon.

It also offers an opportunity for people who may not visit an art museum regularly to step inside and become familiar with what it has to offer. A free community event can make that first visit feel easier, particularly for families looking for activities that welcome different ages and interests.

For children, the memory might be carving a pumpkin or creating something at an art station. For parents, it might be seeing their children become absorbed in an activity or watching them discover something new. For another visitor, it could be finding an exhibition that inspires a conversation long after leaving the museum.

Those experiences may look different for everyone, and that is part of the appeal.

The NIC's Fall Open House brings together the simple pleasures of autumn and the lasting value of creative expression. It gives the community a reason to gather, offers local and regional art a place in the day's experience, and makes room for visitors to enjoy the museum in a relaxed, family-friendly setting.

As Casper settles into the fall season, the event provides a welcoming way to spend a Saturday surrounded by pumpkins, art, conversation, and opportunities to make something memorable.

The Fall Open House takes place Saturday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Nicolaysen Art Museum, located at 400 E. Collins Drive in downtown Casper. Admission is completely free, and visitors can enjoy the fall activities, pumpkin carving demonstration and competition, seasonal refreshments, and featured gallery exhibitions.

Whether you come with a plan to enter the pumpkin contest, want to introduce your family to the museum, or simply feel like spending part of the day somewhere creative, The NIC is opening its doors to welcome you.

Sometimes a community celebration is about more than the activities on the schedule. It is about having a place where people can gather, share an experience, discover something new, and leave with a memory of a day well spent.

This Saturday, The NIC offers Casper just that kind of opportunity.
