Water is an important part of life in Wyoming, and understanding how it is managed can help communities better understand the resources around them. Casper College is inviting the public to take part in a community conversation that aims to make that subject easier to understand.

“Let’s Talk: Where Does Our Water Go? Understanding the North Platte System” will take place on Thursday, October 8, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Casper College. The free event is designed for the general public and does not require a scientific or technical background to attend.

Rather than presenting the subject as a highly technical lecture, the event offers an opportunity for community members to learn more about how the regional water system works and to ask questions in a public setting. The discussion is part of Casper College’s broader Community Learning Series, which creates opportunities for residents to explore issues and subjects that have a connection to life in Wyoming.

The evening will focus on the North Platte system, including the different factors involved in managing water resources. Attendees will be introduced to how water storage and releases are handled, how water is allocated, and what considerations can influence decisions throughout the system.

The conversation will also provide context around factors such as storage levels, evaporation, drought conditions, and downstream water obligations. Rather than expecting attendees to already understand the terminology or processes involved, the event is intended to provide a clearer picture of how the system operates.

For Casper residents who have seen recent conversations about water levels at Pathfinder Reservoir, the event offers a chance to learn more about the broader system behind those observations. The goal is to provide information and create an opportunity for questions, rather than asking attendees to arrive with a particular viewpoint.

One of the most valuable parts of the evening will come toward the end of the program, when attendees will have an opportunity to participate in a moderated question-and-answer session. This gives community members a chance to bring forward questions they may have about the North Platte system and hear them addressed during the discussion.

The event will be held at Walter H. Nolte Gateway Center, Room 225, located inside the Robert and Ruth Dove Conference Center on the Casper College campus. Admission is free and open to the public, making the program accessible to anyone interested in learning more about Wyoming’s water resources.

Community conversations like this can be especially useful when a subject feels complicated. Instead of relying on short conversations or isolated pieces of information, residents have an opportunity to spend an evening learning about the topic in one place, hearing an overview of the system, and asking questions directly.

Whether attendees are familiar with Wyoming water management or are simply curious about where the water around them comes from and how it is managed, the evening is designed to provide an approachable starting point.

For Casper, the event is another opportunity to bring learning beyond the traditional classroom and into the community. It encourages residents to be curious, ask questions, and better understand one of the resources that plays an important role in communities throughout Wyoming.
