Wyoming residents have a rare chance to see the aurora borealis tonight, as strong geomagnetic storms are boosting the reach of the northern lights across the region.

The Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G1-G2 geomagnetic storm watch for August 11 and 12, bringing northern lights into view for areas unaccustomed to such displays.

In Casper, skies are expected to be partly cloudy around 10:00 PM, with mild temperatures near 71°F (21°C), offering fair but uncertain viewing conditions.

The Kp index could reach level 6 overnight — a strong indicator that auroras may be visible as far south as Wyoming's mid-latitude skies.

With Solar Cycle 25 peaking soon, these spectacular displays may become more common locally.

Those eager for a glimpse should seek dark, open spaces and face north after sunset for the best chance at seeing nature’s luminous spectacle.
