Every successful business starts somewhere.

Sometimes it begins with a problem that keeps coming up. Sometimes it starts with a skill someone has spent years developing. And sometimes it begins with a simple thought: there has to be a better way.

On Wednesday, September 30, Casper will get a look at five such ideas during the 2026 Casper Start-Up Challenge Pitch Night, where local entrepreneurs will take the stage at The Rialto and make their case for why their businesses are ready for the next step.

Hosted by Advance Casper and the University of Wyoming Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the competition is the culmination of an intensive process that has given participating entrepreneurs opportunities to refine their concepts, receive guidance and prepare for the moment when they have to put their ideas in front of a room full of people.

The finalists are competing for a share of up to $50,000 in seed funding, along with support designed to help turn promising concepts into growing businesses. For the entrepreneurs taking the stage, the evening is about more than winning money. It is an opportunity to introduce their companies to the Casper community and demonstrate what locally grown innovation can look like.

And this year's group represents a remarkably wide range of ideas.

Meet the 2026 Finalists

Vouno Pack

For Phil and Megan Zaharas, the idea behind Vouno Pack grew from experience in Wyoming's backcountry.

Their company is developing a lightweight, waterproof and reusable pack liner designed specifically for hunters transporting harvested game. The durable liner is built to handle the demanding conditions of a backcountry pack-out while helping protect the gear inside a hunting pack.

It is a product born from a very specific problem, with an equally specific audience in mind.

Flocking Around LLC / Flock Blocker

Zachariah Hutchinson is approaching a much different problem: the danger that windows can pose to birds.

Through Flocking Around LLC, Hutchinson is developing Flock Blocker, a reusable template that allows homeowners to create bird-safe patterns on glass and reflective surfaces.

The concept takes conservation knowledge and turns it into something practical that homeowners can use, creating a potential way to make everyday windows safer for birds.

RangeLink Technologies

Wyoming's ranching tradition meets emerging technology through RangeLink Technologies, founded by Michael Clyde.

The company is developing technology designed to modernize livestock management, including a virtual fencing approach that can help ranchers monitor cattle and manage grazing areas remotely.

For ranchers working across huge expanses of open country, technology that can reduce some of the challenges associated with managing livestock and interior fencing could have meaningful implications.

Legacy AI Technologies

Koslowsky is bringing an entirely different question to the competition: how can artificial intelligence become better at making responsible decisions?

Legacy AI Technologies is developing an approach focused on incorporating stronger judgment and values into AI systems rather than relying solely on external restrictions after a system has already been built.

The company's work enters a conversation that is becoming increasingly relevant far beyond Casper as artificial intelligence becomes a larger part of everyday life.

Culture Club

Leadership is at the center of Culture Club, founded by Nicole Carlson.

The business focuses on professional coaching, training and leadership development with an emphasis on communication, trust, workplace culture and more human-centered leadership.

Rather than treating leadership as a set of technical skills alone, Culture Club is built around the idea that stronger workplaces begin with stronger relationships between the people inside them.

More Than a Pitch

What makes the Casper Start-Up Challenge particularly interesting is the variety represented on one stage.

A hunting product. Bird conservation. Ranch technology. Artificial intelligence. Leadership development.

They are vastly different businesses, but they share something important: each began with someone identifying a problem or opportunity and deciding to build an answer.

That is the part of entrepreneurship that can sometimes get lost behind business plans, funding numbers and polished presentations.

Before there is a company, there is a person willing to take an idea seriously.

For Casper, Pitch Night offers an opportunity to see that process up close.

It is also a reflection of a community's role in entrepreneurship. A startup needs more than an idea. It needs customers, mentors, partners, employees and people willing to believe that something being built locally can eventually reach far beyond the city.

The five finalists have already spent weeks developing their ideas through the challenge's accelerator process. Now they get to step in front of the community and make their case.

The evening begins at 5 p.m. Wednesday, September 30, at The Rialto in downtown Casper.

For anyone interested in business, technology, innovation or simply the people trying something new in their own community, it is a chance to meet five entrepreneurs at an important point in their journeys.

Because a startup does not have to begin in Silicon Valley to have a big idea.

Sometimes, it begins right here in Casper.

And next Wednesday night, the community gets to see where five of those ideas might go.
