Built by Teens, Scared by Everyone: Casper Youth Hub Turns Halloween Into a Community Project

Behind the spooky hallways and Halloween scares is a bigger story about young people taking the lead, learning new skills, and creating a safe place for their community to come together.

Halloween attractions are usually remembered for their frightening characters, unexpected surprises, and dark hallways. But at the Casper Youth Hub, the most interesting part of this year's haunted house may be what happens behind the scenes. Local teenagers are not simply showing up to experience the scares. They are the ones helping bring them to life.

From October 29 through October 31, the Casper Youth Hub is opening its haunted house to the public at 201 E. 2nd Street, Suite 212, downstairs. Operating nightly from 6 to 10 p.m., the attraction offers Casper residents a Halloween experience created through the imagination, effort, and teamwork of local youth.

What makes this haunted house different is the people behind it. Young participants ages 10 to 18 have helped conceptualize, construct, and bring the attraction to life, taking on roles as both its creators and performers. The result is more than a seasonal activity. It is a project that gives teenagers an opportunity to turn creative ideas into something their community can experience.

Building a haunted house requires more than decorating a room with cobwebs and spooky props. It takes planning, creativity, and cooperation. From arranging spaces and designing themed areas to constructing displays and coordinating character performances, young participants get to experience different aspects of putting together a real attraction. These activities can introduce practical skills such as basic construction, spatial planning, creative design, problem-solving, and collaborative project work.

There is also an important lesson in responsibility. Bringing an attraction together requires participants to work toward a shared goal, communicate their ideas, manage their assigned tasks, and consider the experience of the people walking through their creation. For teenagers, having the chance to contribute to a project that welcomes the public can build confidence and give their creativity a meaningful purpose.

Accessibility is another important part of the initiative. Admission is free for teenagers ages 10 to 18, while adults are charged a $5 cover fee. The approach helps make the Halloween experience more accessible to young people while encouraging adults and other community members to support the project.

Even more meaningful is where the money goes. All proceeds from admission and public donations are directed back to the Casper Youth Hub to support its programs and resources. That includes food, art workshops, and recreational supplies such as equipment for the pool table. In this way, the haunted house becomes a community-supported activity that helps sustain the space where young people can continue gathering, learning, and spending time together.

The project also highlights the value of partnerships between youth organizations and the downtown business community. With support from the Casper Downtown Development Authority, the haunted house brings additional activity to downtown Casper during one of the busiest and most recognizable weekends of the fall season. It demonstrates how local organizations can work together to create opportunities that benefit young people while contributing to the energy of the downtown area.

For teenagers, having a place where they can participate, express themselves, and connect with others matters. A youth hub is more than a room to spend time in. It can become a place where friendships develop, creative interests grow, and young people discover what they are capable of accomplishing when given the opportunity and support.

That is what makes this Halloween project worth recognizing. Visitors may come through the doors expecting a few frightening surprises, but behind every decorated space and costumed character is the effort of young people who helped make the experience possible. Their work turns a seasonal attraction into an example of youth involvement, creativity, and community investment.

The Casper Youth Hub Haunted House will continue through Halloween night, October 31, with operating hours from 6 to 10 p.m. Located downstairs at 201 E. 2nd Street, Suite 212, it offers families and visitors an opportunity to enjoy a locally created Halloween attraction while supporting a space dedicated to Casper's young people.

Sometimes, the best community projects are the ones that give people more than entertainment. They create opportunities, encourage participation, and remind young people that their ideas and contributions matter. At the Casper Youth Hub, the scares may be the attraction, but the real achievement is what the teenagers have built together.
