What happens when you take a bicycle apart in your imagination and start asking why it works?

That is the question behind GEAR UP: The Science of Bikes, a traveling exhibition now arriving at The Science Zone in Casper and turning the familiar bicycle into a hands-on lesson in history, engineering, physics and design.

Running from September 21, 2026, through January 8, 2027, the exhibition was developed by the Carnegie Science Center and gives visitors an opportunity to explore bicycles from a completely different perspective.

For many people, bikes are simply part of everyday life. They are used to get around the neighborhood, explore trails or enjoy a ride on a sunny afternoon. GEAR UP takes that familiar object and asks visitors to look underneath the handlebars and pedals to discover the science that makes it possible.

The exhibition includes bicycles representing different periods and styles of development, including the iconic Penny Farthing, classic cruisers, customized Tall Bikes, unicycles and adaptive bicycles.

Together, the collection shows how much the bicycle has changed over more than a century while also highlighting how certain scientific principles have remained constant.

But this is not a display that asks visitors to simply look.

GEAR UP is built around interaction.

At one station, visitors can get on a bike crank and pedal to generate electricity. The exhibit then demonstrates how much human effort and kinetic energy is needed to produce enough power to illuminate different types of light bulbs.

In another hands-on experience, visitors can explore the physics of motion by sending balls down ramps with the same overall drop but different slopes. The activity turns concepts such as inertia, friction, gravity and angles into something visitors can actually observe.

Then there is the “Hit the Brakes” challenge, where participants can experiment with different braking materials and see how friction affects a spinning wheel.

It is the kind of exhibit that makes it easy for a child to walk in thinking about bicycles and walk out thinking about physics.

And that is what makes GEAR UP particularly fitting for The Science Zone.

The exhibition connects history, technology and science without making the experience feel like a traditional lesson. Visitors are encouraged to touch, try, experiment and make discoveries for themselves.

There is something for the bike enthusiast, the young scientist, the curious parent and anyone who has ever wondered why a bicycle can balance, move and stop the way it does.

GEAR UP also makes an excellent reminder that science is not always hidden away in complicated equipment or laboratories. Sometimes, it is sitting in your garage.

The exhibit is included with regular admission to The Science Zone, which is $7.50 for guests age 3 and older. Children under 3 and museum members receive free admission.

Located at 222 E. Collins Drive, The Science Zone is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
