The Casper Elks Lodge #1353 saw one of the largest community turnouts in recent memory on Thursday as hundreds of residents poured in for the lodge’s second annual Free Community Thanksgiving Feast. What began as a simple effort to make sure no one in Casper spent the holiday alone quickly grew into a major community event—one that stretched the building to its limits.

By the time the doors opened at 11:00 a.m., over 100 people were already lined up outside, wrapping down the stairs and into the hallway of the historic lodge. Within minutes, the line extended throughout the banquet hall and continued out the entrance, with cars filling blocks around 7th Street as families, seniors, and individuals made their way in for a warm meal and even warmer company.

For the entire four-hour event, the crowd never slowed. New guests arrived just as others finished dining, creating a steady, continuous flow of people grateful for a place to share Thanksgiving.

A Community That Showed Up Big

The kitchen and serving lines were buzzing with activity thanks to a large crew of volunteers who worked nonstop throughout the day. Longtime Elks members, first-time volunteers, and even local leaders rolled up their sleeves to keep the operation running smoothly.

Casper City Council member Sweeny was down in the kitchen, shoulder to shoulder with the volunteers and the event coordinator, cooking food and keeping the operation moving. His presence added to the strong sense of unity and community service that filled the lodge from top to bottom.

A Feast Born From the Heart

Though this event is still relatively new to Casper, its impact was unmistakable. The banquet hall was filled with families celebrating together, individuals who might otherwise have spent the day alone, residents experiencing food insecurity, and people simply wanting to be part of something meaningful.

The Elks staff and volunteers prepared a full Thanksgiving spread—turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, vegetables, rolls, desserts—and ensured each plate was served with kindness. For many, the connection mattered as much as the meal.

Lines Out the Door, Smiles Everywhere

Despite the massive turnout, the Elks team managed the crowds with warmth and efficiency. Guests consistently described the experience as welcoming, organized, and heartfelt. No one was turned away, and no one went hungry.

The mood throughout the event was joyful and communal: families laughing, neighbors catching up, volunteers visiting with guests at the tables. For many attendees, it wasn’t just about the food—it was about belonging.

A New Casper Holiday Tradition

What began as an effort to help those in need has quickly transformed into one of Casper’s most meaningful Thanksgiving traditions—one powered entirely by community generosity, volunteer spirit, and a deep sense of togetherness.

The Casper Elks Lodge plans to continue hosting the Community Thanksgiving Feast each year and encourages anyone who wants to support the effort—donating food, volunteering time, or simply spreading the word—to join in future years.

Nathan Soper’s Leadership at the Heart of It All

A special acknowledgment goes to Nathan Soper, the driving force behind the entire Thanksgiving Feast. Hayden didn’t just organize the event—he lived and breathed every detail of it. From coordinating food, volunteers, and logistics to spending the day working nonstop alongside the kitchen crew, his commitment was unmistakable. Those who watched him in action saw a leader who didn’t just direct the event—he served, encouraged, cooked, cleaned, and made sure every guest who walked through the door felt welcomed.

His dedication, compassion, and hands-on leadership are a major reason this feast has already become one of Casper’s most meaningful holiday traditions. It’s clear that without Nathan Soper heart, determination, and hard work, the event simply wouldn’t be what it is today.
